Common shortcuts

Enter / Tab: Element transitions — configurable per element in the keymap above
Ctrl+E (or the binding recorded above): Cycle element type
Ctrl+Enter: Open the element type menu
Ctrl+S: Save · Ctrl+P: Print
Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z / Ctrl+Y: Undo / Redo
Ctrl+B / I / U: Bold / Italic / Underline (Action, Dialogue, Parenthetical)
Shift+Enter: Split the line, keeping the same element type
Esc: Close menus and dialogs; from the editor, jump to the toolbar

Ctrl means ⌘ on Mac. Enter/Tab transitions and the cycle shortcut can be remapped above.

SFSS at a Glance

SFSS (Simple Free Screenplay Software) is a local-first, offline-capable screenwriting PWA. No accounts, no servers—your work stays on your device.

Core Modes

Write: Context-aware editor with autocomplete and fast type switching.
Page View & Print: True-to-page pagination (Letter/A4) shared with Print Prep.
Treatment (Plan): Scene cards with colors/icons, descriptions, images, and track links.
Reports: Scene stats, character breakdowns, and chronology with printable summaries.

Writing & Formatting

Forces: start a line with . for a scene heading, @ for a character, ! for action, or > for a transition; wrap a line in > ... < to center it.
Inline emphasis: **bold**, *italic*, _underline_ — toggle with Ctrl+B / I / U in Action, Dialogue, and Parenthetical. Markers stay visible (dimmed) while you write and are hidden in Page View, print, and exports.
Notes: [[like this]] travel with the script but are excluded from output and from page/word counts.
Reordering: in Treatment, drag scene cards by their grip handle (the chevron buttons still work too).
Paper size: pick Letter or A4 per script in Print Prep or Script Details — page counts are identical on both.

Data, Privacy, and Storage

Local-only: Scripts, scene images, and settings live in your browser (IndexedDB + LocalStorage).
Offline-first: Works fully offline once loaded; installable as a PWA.
No tracking: No analytics or cookies. YouTube metadata is fetched only if you paste/play a link.
Backups: Use .json for full backups (images stay in IndexedDB), .fdx/.fountain/.txt for interchange.

Feature Toggles & Portable

Feature toggles: Turn Collaboration / Media on or off; apply on reload.
Portable build: One-file file:// export with Collaboration & Media removed; YouTube links render as clickable anchors.

Quick Start

New/Open from the File menu; autosave runs continuously.
Switch Write/Plan via toolbar or mobile toggle; drag scenes in Treatment.
Use Print for script/treatment/report outputs; reports live in the Reports modal.
Collab (host/guest baton) is optional and network-dependent.

Feature Management

Choose which optional modules load next time. Changes are staged and applied on reload.

Collaboration and Media are optional; disabling them trims load and avoids network dependencies.

Portable Single-File Build

Generate a single HTML you can open via file://. Collaboration and Media Player are excluded; scene tracks show as links.

Included: Editor, pagination/print, treatment, reports, storage.
Not included: Collaboration (network-bound), Media Player (YouTube iframe).
Tracks: YouTube URLs remain as clickable anchors in scene settings and Treatment.
